It’s the small things

Austin is awesome. Everyday is filled with friends fun and plenty of excitement. Its a great place to call home even if it gets a bit warm at times. However vacation is vacation and it’s been far too long since we have been down to see Sugar Shack.

Work. Yeah it gets in the way of vacation but also allows us the opportunity to pretend we are retired for short stints of time. We call these opportunities vacations or practice retirements.

Some people save forever to retire, others spend every dime along the way. We are splitting the difference and playing and practicing for a semi permanent vacation at some point. Playing when we can and adding the things we like to the Shack to make it a home along the way.

This hurricane season we had a few odds and ends attended to on the boat list. Some canvas work to protect it from the sun, an insurance survey, a fresh wax and some fresh paint on the seagull striker that it has needed since we purchased her in Turkey. A rigging inspection that came back positive eventho it’s getting close to time for it to be replaced.

Vacation started this morning with a cold beer before 8am local time, I’m sure its 5 o’clock some where. We charmed our way into the airport lounge so why not?

Flights so far are on time and these first class seats are comfy. We found Wayne in Dallas so the sailing crew is on their way south and itching to loose the long sleeves for some shorts. The toes were quite frozen boarding the taxi at the house this morning. Next stop is Miami so they should thaw out pretty soon.

We have a little work to do in the morning to get ready to sail. It’s the preparation day that makes ya wonder if it’s better to just charter as the boat is ready when you show up. Obviously we chose the other option in anticipation of a more permanent vacation. It would be nicer to get to spend more time on the Shack but you have to have your goals. One benefit of our plan is that some of our stuff is already on the boat, be it clothes or cooking utensils – you a know what a knife snob I am.

In the morning we will fill the water tanks, put the interior back together, check the props, try to dress her with the sails, settle the yard bill, and find a way to stock the pantry, provisioning for those who like the sailors terms.

Signed.

Limed the day away in Barbados

Lounging by the water. Both pool and ocean. Lots of tasty beverages and snacks watching the kite boarders and tourists attempt to surf.

Christine found a silver breeze was a tasty beverage while Wayne and I stuck to the local beer called Banks. Christine found a nap was necessary after a few of those silver devils and soaked in some z’s and rays at the same time.

We met some folks from England and one if the kite boarders. We sat back and commented on the wedding that was getting ready to take place on the beach. Simply a tacky douchy affair. So it was good for watching.

A quick shower and back down for dinner by the sea. A few more adult beverages and we hit the hay early for a 7:30 wake up call.

A very relaxing day by the sea. nothing to do but play words and enjoy the sounds and beers.

Sweet Spot Petite St Vincent

Great little hideaway, behind a reef, between 2 little islands. So cool in fact that a SunSail floatilla decided to anchor here as well, and spoil the view that we had. Oh well, provided lots of entertainment watching the captain/crew of the floatilla leaders jump from boat to boat to help them anchor and get set. Of course one is currently floating over our anchor, so we will have to get them to move when we decide to leave.

The island has a great little resort on it, we walked about 1/2 way around the island on the nice coral white beach. We were not allowed to walk through the island resort, but around the beach was okay. Of course, the let us into the bar and restaurant for a cold beverage after the walk.

Some snacks on the boat, enjoying the view before the floatilla arrived was awesome.

Our freezer hasn’t been working as it should, last trip the gauge read high but still made ice, this trip the gauge had been working and everything froze as it should for the first few days. But recently it quit making ice and the frozen food was starting to thaw out, so the last 2 days we have been eating quite well, finishing up the chicken and and shrimp that were thawing out. A grilled shrimp and veggie salad for dinner last night.

Off to Grenada here in just a bit.
