Fine dining on Curacao

We learned that there was a farmers market at Mambo Beach so we made plans to meet Tom and Bianca there. We were not sure what to expect from the Mambo Beach for their farmer’s market but it gave us an opportunity to hang out with our new friends.  Matt and I walked to Mambo Beach which is about 2.6 miles each way and met Tom and Bianca right on time.

But, being “island time” the vendors were still setting up so we decided to get some coffee.  We sat down at a local cafe only for me to turn around and see a giant Starbucks – what the devil? I had not had Starbucks since I traveled here (6 months ago) but decided to wait to get a green tea frappuccino until I traveled back to the States.  What will power, right?  As it turned out, the farmer’s market was really more of a sell your wares and nick knacks to tourists as opposed to the markets we are used to in the States with fresh fruits, veggies, herbs, honey, etc…but it was fun to peruse the goods.  I am thinking that everyone goes to the floating fresh fruit and veggie market in town and do not need true farmer’s markets – maybe?

On the way back to Fisherman’s Harbor, Tom swung by a restaurant called Equus which he said is a “must try place to eat” but it is only open on Friday nights.  They serve beef, chicken, shrimp, and veggie skewers.  We made a mental note to return!

Tom and Bianca invited us back to their house for another pizza party-YEAH!.  This time they invited our new boat friends from Bella (Ulreka and Matias who are from Germany) and James on Moonrise who is from England.  They also invited some of their land lubbing friends, a couple from Germany, Ingmor, Sebastian, and Susanna (I am sure I butchered the spelling of their names, but I mean well).  It was so fascinating to be on a Netherland Antilles Island, eating home made pizza, with a group speaking German, a group speaking Dutch, and a group speaking English.  What group we were in 🙂  This is a normal occurrence on the island where you have multiple languages being spoken at a gathering, but for us Americans it is so unusual and yet so inspiring.  Everyone took a turn at making a pizza under the watchful guidance of our hosts.

The following Friday we called up Steve (from Kiolla III) and asked if he was up for trying a new eatery out-Equus!  Tom and Bianca had family in town and could not join us but they told us we should get there as close to opening as possible as gets very crowded. We hopped on to the 6A Carracasbaai bus which dropped us off conveniently at the corner of the restaurant’s street.  They opened at 5p and we were a little early, so we waited until the gates swung open and let us in.  This place is located in the heart of a neighborhood and does not look like a restaurant from the street – you have to know what you are looking for to come here.  Typically, the tables and chairs are stored so when you look through the gate any other day it looks like a regular driveway.

We were not familiar with the ordering process so we bellied up to the bar, ordered some drinks and found a table.  We noticed that the fire pit was being primed and people all headed to the bar first .  The tables were filling up fast around us.  We asked how to order food since nobody came around.  Evidently, you order at the bar.  Shoot.  We were told to order quickly or we would be forced to wait for the next round.  Luckily the boys were able to place our order just in the nick of time and we ate with the first round.

After cooking, they hang skewers above the fire then just before serving.

This was an absolutely amazingly tasty meal!  We ordered one of each: beef, chicken, and veggie and they were masha dushi (very scrumptious)!  Of course, we managed to drink more than the cost of the food, but it was worth it!

Delisia Aquarium

Just trying out some Papiamento on you – the title means “Fun aquarium.”  Matt and I decided to visit the aquarium since we had not been snorkeling in a few days.  Ha, kidding.  We just wanted to check it out since we heard it was pretty amazing and very different from other aquariums.  The Curacao Aquarium is located near Mambo Blvd. and Mambo Beach which would make it really convenient to have lunch on the beach afterwards.  We could have taken the bus, but we decided to walk through the salt flats since they have good trails and it would give us some exercise.

We packed our back pack, headed into shore, and hit to the trails.  It should be a relatively short walk, about 3 miles to the aquarium.  We explored a few new trails, met a few people along the way and arrived one hot sweaty mess. Unfortunately, I did not bring my bathing suit so I could not jump in the beautiful water, but Matt got a free shower for the day.

As Matt was showering off, I headed to the little girl’s room and spotted an ancient machine still in use – do you remember these?

What? These are still working?

As we walked up to the entrance of the Aquarium, before we paid, we heard a little show going on so we ambled over to the wall and could easily watch the entire sea lion presentation.  They gave the presentation in both English and Papiamento with great enthusiasm.   The really cool part of this Aquarium is that it is all salt water fed from the ocean!

Once inside, we paid, got a map and schedule and were on our way.  The first stop was an exterior area that had several quadrants where you could have an animal encounter.  What type of animal you ask?  Well, we happened to arrive as two women were in the water with two trainers.  In the main area there were a half dozen fairly large sting rays and large tarpin.  Then you move to a quadrant and there were sharks that you could feed.  One had a lemon shark and another area had another type of shark.  The ladies had snorkel gear on and would go under water with a fish and shove it in a hole through a large piece of plastic that separated them from the shark. I  imagine it was a huge thrill as they were giggling and laughing the entire time – of course the sting rays would want some food too and they would swim between the ladies and the plastic barrier giving them a big thrill.

As we continued down the path we came across the dolphin area where they were training 7 dolphins basic commands.

We enjoyed the dolphin exhibition so much we decided to go see the actual show which happened to be starting in 20 minutes.  So we walked over to the dolphin presentation and learned that they actually train their dolphins to leave the aquarium and go outside in the open water.  As we were sitting there, they had two dolphins doing flips just outside the aquarium wall – pretty cool.

Next we walked around the main aquarium area which was a bit small, but they really focus on their presentations, training, and underwater observatories.  We sat in on a Lobster presentation which to my astonishment was really informative.

The last presentation was a flamingo feeding and to my great surprise they allowed everyone to come in and feed these majestic creatures.  It was really smelly, a bit messy, and wet but a true joy!

After our long walk and the aquarium exploration we were hungry so we headed to Mambo Blvd. to find an eatery.  They have a ton of bars, shops and restaurants here – at some point we will have to stop playing old people and come here at night to enjoy the festivities.  We landed at the Lion’s Dive Beach and saddled up to the bar where we enjoyed a pretty yummy meal.  Matt had a cheeseburger in paradise and I had shrimp skewers.

Now that we were fed we had a choice of catching the bus back or walking – we looked at each other and decided to walk the 3 miles back to Fisherman’s Harbor so off we went.

After a very busy day, Matt made me pork chops and we settled in for the evening.
