Te Aworo Bonaire

“Goodbye Bonaire”  Our friends, Shawn and Sharon are meeting us in Aruba, so we needed to leave our beloved island of Bonaire to head south west.  Unfortunately, there was no wind (less than 8 knots) so we ended up motoring the entire way from Bonaire toward Klein Curacao.

On the way over, we ran the little generator, water maker, and washer machine (did you know we have a washer/dryer on board – oh ya!).  Of course, I was just doing my delicates and things that needed to be lined dried so the laundry service could focus on towels, sheets, and other bulky items.  We also had to dry out our dive gear so we could stow it for a few weeks on board.

We happened to leave at the same time as Always Sunday so it was not a surprise to hear them hail us on the VHF.  They talked us into heading to Klein Curacao for the night – they did not have to try very hard as we loved this little island stop and just needed a reason to stop short of Curacao.

When we arrived, we met Ricky and Robin (Always Sunday) for a snorkel where we saw lots of turtles, a few scorpion fish, an eel and lots of other little sea creatures.  They invited us to their boat for tuna and a card game.  They have a beautiful 40’ Lagoon 2013 that is immaculately kept. Robin prepared a lovely tuna dish and taught us a new card game that Matt dutifully won.  Despite the fact that they let me cheat my times,  I still came in last.

Once we arrived in Curacao, we rented a car and ran a bazillion errands: dropped laundry, Budget Marine (pick up Life Seal that we ordered), Scuba and More (fix our regulators), Digicel (update our data plan), customs & immigration, Cost U Less, Best Buy, Vruegedenhill, Van Den Twill, Kooyman, Mangusa Grocery and Centrum Market.  We managed to get back in time for happy hour where we met our friends Steve (Kialoa III), James (Moonrise), Matias and Ulreke (Bella) for a final toddy before we head West.

The next day, we picked up our clean laundry, repaired regulators, and a swung by few more stores to find some elusive items (diet coke, diet ginger ale, mozzarella, and ribs).  We returned to the boat to unpack and stow all our goodies and headed to The Pier for the weekly captain’s dinner where they were serving dorado which was delicious.  We enjoyed hanging out with our friends and 25 other boater pals of Spanish Waters.

Labor Day in Bonaire

Matt and I were planning on leaving the day after Labor Day so we decided to throw ourselves a party. Well, truth be told, our friends on Shangri-La started the talks and we just ran with it.  Of course, we would be celebrating an American holiday with Canadians, Norwegians, Germans, Dutch, and a small handful of Americans.   There is a little public park with benches and a playground so we commandeered it for the afternoon and enjoyed some land time.

Everyone brought something to snack on and grill and we brought brownies, snacks, and of course jello shots.  Most of our guests had never had a jello shot so it was really fun to introduce them to this new way of drinking.

It is always sad to say goodbye, but totally exciting to know that you will see them again in another bay and another country.

A Night Out

Usually we stay on board and Matt cooks an amazing dinner, but this night we decided to go out and try something new.  It was Thursday night so we started at Karel’s Beach Bar for happy hour.  It turned out to be good timing as the bartender/manager we met Don De Leon was leaving and heading to Aruba for a few years.  Of course, we will have to track him down when we get there next month.

Karel’s is right on the water and always treats us to a beautiful sunset.  I walked a little down the water’s edge to capture some pretty photos of Sugar Shack.

We have not eaten out much on island so we had a lot of options to choose from.  There is a casual place called Diver’s Diner right down the road as well as a fancier place called It Rains Fishes which is on the waterfront. But we headed toward a Brazilian place that never seems open when we walk by (of course it could be a night only place and we walk by during the day). On the way, we passed a cute little place that looked like a French cafe with tons of arepas (a Columbia/Venezuelan dish) but all of the outdoor tables were full (they only had about 6) so we peeked in next door at a place called La Cantina Cerveceria.  We were looking for something casual and thought this had the same menu as both menus were out for perusal.  We walked under this beautiful pergola dimly lit with decorative lights and entered a private, beautiful, garden courtyard.  I was sold on the setting, but Matt was sold on the IPA (which he had been missing since we arrived at the islands)

Saison and IPA for Matt – oh happy day!

This menu was different than we thought, but they had a lot of fresh fish.  It was not crowded so we served pretty quickly.  They start you off with complimentary appetizers including mixed olives, bitterballen (a Dutch staple, but not my favorite) and assorted nuts.

Complimentary appetizers to start.

After we ordered, a delicious bread platter arrived on top of a cutting board that was shaped like Bonaire and Klein Bonaire with BREAD, assorted spreads and cheeses (I had already eaten my bread ball before the photo).

Check out the bread board in the shape of Bonaire and Klein Bonaire!

We were already getting full and our meal had not even arrived.  But not long after, the fresh tuna with three shrimps arrived accompanied by a bowl of fingerling potatoes.

Tuna, veggie salad, and shrimp.

It was a pretty tasty meal, but I think Matt’s favorite thing was the Saison and Blonde IPA!  I topped off the dinner with some local ice cream and we happily called it a goodnight!

Here are some more photos I took of Sugar Shack around Sunset time.

Another pretty tree, but this one has red blooms.

Sugar Shack looks so pretty in the orange and purple hues.
